Simple Kitchery with Tamarind

Another one of Prabha's great recipes.  This is a dry Kitcheri that is light and tasty. The tamarind gives it a tangy and slightly sweet flavor plus tamarind supports digestive enyzmes.

Ingredients:

  • Red Masoor daal................................3 tbs
  • Basmati rice ......................................3 tbs
  • Quinoa...............................................3 tbs
  • tamarind.............................................1 big pod/shelled
  • ginger chopped..................................1 tsp
  • curry leaves chopped.........................1 tsp
  • green chilly chopped.........................1/4 tsp
  • spice mix...........................................1 tsp
  • Cooling Soma Salt..........................1/2 tsp
  • ghee or olive oil..................................2 tsp

Instructions:

  1. Rinse the first 3 items and set aside.
  2. In a medium pot, heat the ghee or oil.
  3. Add ginger, curry leaves and chilly.
  4. Fry for a few minutes.
  5. Add the tamarind pieces, soma salt and spice mix.
  6. Fry all together for a few more minutes.
  7. Add the 3 washed grains and enough water to cover the grains.
  8. Bring to a boil. Reduce and simmer for 10 minutes.
  9. All the water should be absorbed and grains all cook through.
  10. Discard the black tamarind seeds as you have the food.
  11. You may also try with some fried panch foran, paneer, cashews, or any hard veggies.
  12. Saute them first and then add the 3 grains with water and cook.

Enjoy!
