How to Stay Cool During Extreme Summer Heat — The Ayurvedic Way

When temperatures climb above 100°F, most people think only about dehydration. While hydration is certainly important, Ayurveda teaches that excessive summer heat affects the entire physiology by increasing Pitta Dosha—our body's heat, transformation, and metabolic intelligence.
Understanding why this happens helps us make simple choices that keep us cooler, more comfortable, and more energetic throughout the summer.
Shaka Vansiya Ayurveda teaches that our physical body is supported by vibrational energy called Prana. My Ayurvedic teacher, Vaidya Mishra, often described Prana as the subtle bioelectric intelligence supplied by the Sun (Agni), the Moon (Soma), and the balancing influence of Marut.
Agni transforms, heats and dries. Soma cools, stabilizes and lubricates. Marut regulates and maintains balance.
When I explain this to patients, I use the analogy of a pot of rice on the stove. The burner is Agni, the water and rice are Soma, and the cook represents Marut, intelligently adjusting the heat and water to keep everything in balance.
In the heat of summer, it is as though the burner is turned up too high. Excess Agni evaporates Soma, leaving the body hotter and drier. Ayurveda calls this an aggravation of Pitta Dosha.
Pitta influences digestion, the liver, emotions, the eyes, and the skin. During periods of extreme heat these areas are often the first to show signs of imbalance.
Reducing Agni means increasing Soma. In practical terms, we cool the body, nourish fluids, and support the natural flow of Prana.
Favor sweet juicy fruits, green vegetables, summer squashes, pomegranate, and cooling herbs. Reduce excessive spicy foods, sour foods, and ordinary salt during very hot weather.
Although most salts tend to increase Pitta, Cooling Soma Salt is traditionally valued in the Shaka Vansiya Ayurveda lineage because of its cooling qualities. It recently received national attention after being featured in a widely viewed YouTube video that generated more than 1,000 customer requests.
Helpful summer practices include chewing toasted fennel seeds after meals, using DGL Transdermal Cream or Fennel Cream over the stomach, supporting the liver with DGL Marma Therapy, protecting the eyes with Cooling Soma Netra Eye Drops, practicing Facial Marma with Ageless Beauty Facial Cream, and staying well hydrated with a mineral-rich rehydration drink.
Pomegranate Chutney is one of my favorite summer recipes because it helps balance Pitta while supporting healthy digestion.
Extreme summer heat doesn't have to leave you exhausted. By making a few simple seasonal adjustments—including cooling foods, proper hydration, marma therapy, and balancing Pitta—you can support your body's natural ability to stay cool and energized all summer long.
