How To improve Digestion
A simple Ayurvedic approach to restoring healthy digestion and improving overall wellness.

Digestion is the foundation of health in Ayurveda. When digestion is strong, nutrients are absorbed efficiently, energy improves, and the body naturally maintains balance.

The Ayurvedic Perspective
In Ayurveda we say that Food is Medicine. Even the best quality food becomes toxic without proper digestion.
According to Ayurveda, digestion is governed by Pitta Dosha — think of it as the burner on your stove. Without the burner, nothing gets cooked. If it’s too hot the food burns; if it’s too cold the food isn’t fully cooked. Our digestion works the same way. When the digestive fire (Agni) is too strong or too weak, the result is toxic substances that create imbalances and even disease in the body.
What You Can Do Today
Six Simple Tips to Restore Digestive Fire
- Early to bed. Getting to bed before 10 PM aligns your biological rhythms with Nature’s Clock — a foundational Ayurvedic principle completely missed in modern nutrition.
- Eat at regular times. Begin breakfast with a stewed apple. Make lunch your largest meal (12–1 PM). Keep dinner light, around 6 PM.
- Avoid overeating. Overwhelming the digestive fire creates Ama (undigested residue). Feeling fatigued after meals is a sure sign.
- Sip warm water during meals. Even better: sip a digestive lassi made with homemade yogurt between each bite.
- Avoid cold food and drinks. Cold puts out the digestive flame (Agni).
- Eat in a quiet environment. No phones, TV, or meetings. Sit quietly for 5–10 minutes after finishing your meal.
Can Ayurveda Help You?
- Can Ayurveda help IBS? Yes. I suffered from IBS as a kid and completely healed my symptoms with Ayurveda.
- How long does it take? Most patients notice positive changes in 30 to 60 days.
- Do I need to change my entire diet? If you already eat home-cooked fresh food, the changes will be minimal.
- Can I combine Ayurveda with my doctor’s care? Yes — we recommend including your doctor in your Ayurvedic journey.
